How Do Probiotics Work?

Probiotics provide a beneficial action on the intestinal tract by modulating the intestinal microflora (composition and activity) or by acting directly on intestinal cells. When the microflora is unbalanced, intestinal function is adversely affected. Though benefits vary depending on the type of probiotic bacteria used and the amount consumed (Sanders et al., 2004) experts agree that daily consumption of probiotics is most beneficial. The effects of probiotics consist of impacting bodily functions that may or not be associated with risk factors of disease.
